Missing Teeth and the Holiday Table: What We Get Asked Every November

Every autumn the same conversation comes up at the Vernon practice. Someone has been managing a missing tooth, or a failing one, and the holidays are approaching — a table full of family, a camera, and food that is harder to eat than it should be.

The question is almost always some version of: can this be sorted before then? Here is the honest answer.

What is realistic between now and the holidays

A dental implant needs to fuse with the jawbone before it can carry a crown, and that takes three to six months. There is no way to compress biology, and any practice promising a permanent implant and final crown within a few weeks is overstating what is possible.

What is often realistic in that window is the first half of treatment: the consultation and 3D scan, any extraction that is needed, and the implant placement itself. In some cases an implant can be placed on the same day a tooth is removed — a number of the cases in our results gallery were done exactly that way — but whether that applies to you depends on the bone and the infection present.

Eating with a missing tooth over the holidays

A gap changes how you chew more than most people expect. Food gets redirected to the other side, the opposing tooth has nothing to meet, and neighbouring teeth begin to drift into the space over time. The discomfort at a long meal is the obvious part; the slow movement of the other teeth is the part that costs more to correct later.

  • Chewing shifts to one side, loading those teeth harder than they are meant to carry
  • The tooth above or below the gap can over-erupt with nothing to bite against
  • Adjacent teeth tilt toward the space, which can complicate the eventual restoration
  • Bone in the empty socket gradually resorbs once it has no tooth root to support

Why people ask about metal-free specifically

A good number of the patients who come to Vernon for implants are not simply after a replacement tooth — they want one without titanium. Ceramic implants are white rather than grey, so there is no dark line at the gumline, and zirconia is well tolerated by patients who react to metals.

If that is what brings you here, the SDS implant page covers the system Dr. Jay places most often, and the FAQs answer most of what patients ask before a first visit.

The practical takeaway

If you want to be eating comfortably by next year’s holidays, autumn is a sensible time to start. If you are hoping to be finished by this year’s, a consultation will tell you honestly what is achievable rather than leaving you to guess.
